Working Principle of the Liquid‑Ring Vacuum Pump

Liquid-ring vacuum pumps are rotary positive-displacement vacuum pumps, and the impeller is eccentrically mounted inside the cylindrical intermediate body.During pump operation, centrifugal force imparts kinetic energy to the working fluid inside the pump, forming a liquid ring concentric with and closely adhering to the intermediate body. The liquid ring and rotor blades form multiple working chambers with periodically varying volumes. Fluid flows into and out of each impeller vane chamber, producing an effect equivalent to that of a piston.Near the suction port, liquid recedes from the working chambers; gas is drawn in through the guide disc from the suction inlet. Conversely, near the discharge port, the liquid ring flows into the working chambers, compressing the gas which is then discharged through the exhaust outlet.

During circulation, the working fluid not only forms the liquid ring but also dissipates substantial heat generated by gas compression. Part of the working fluid is carried away along with the discharged gas, so supplementary working fluid is required. This feature enables the compression process to approximate an isothermal condition with minimal temperature rise. Therefore, the pump is especially suitable for handling flammable and explosive gases, fundamentally eliminating potential safety hazards caused by high temperatures.

  • Impeller: The sole moving component inside the pump, eccentrically installed within the pump casing. Acting like a high-speed agitator, it generates strong centrifugal force through rotation to drive the working fluid and form the liquid ring. Its blades are generally forward-curved, a configuration that stabilizes the liquid ring and increases peripheral speed, thereby improving the ultimate vacuum.
  • Pump Casing: Serves as the working enclosure that provides a confined space and supports liquid-ring formation. Its inner-cavity geometry defines the gas flow path. High machining precision is not mandatory; nevertheless, casting blanks must be free of defects such as sand holes and porosity to guarantee sealing performance.
  • Liquid Ring: Composed of water or other liquids, it functions both as a sealing ring and a coolant. It achieves sealing by filling the gaps between the impeller and pump casing, while absorbing heat generated during compression to prevent overheating of the pump casing.
